The Challenge
National Radiology Solutions (NRAD) provides teleradiology services, including telemammography as well as on-site services, to 30 customers across 120 sites. With a commitment to a 24-48 hour report turn-around time, NRAD needed an integration solution that could serve a broad, diverse customer base.
“We know our radiologists have the best training in their specialty areas, and that we can deliver whatever our customers need clinically,” said Tom Ambrose, Chief Information Officer for NRAD. “We wanted to ensure that the operational side was managed at the same high standard.”
Building an HL7 interface for every customer was plainly not feasible; NRAD needed to have integrations up and running quickly so that customers could take full advantage of NRAD teleradiology services. “We were looking for a solution that could be customized, that could speak to all the different EHR and RIS products out there,” said Ambrose. “We wanted to remove obstacles so that any customer, no matter their I.T. infrastructure, could ingest our reports.”

Creating Shareable Data
ScriptSender delivered. ScriptSender enables NRAD to distribute radiology reports in whatever format and reporting structure their customers require. Whether a dropped folder, HL7, FTP, encrypted email, or portal access—customers can elect to receive reports from NRAD in a way that corresponds best to their workflows. All methods are secure and HIPAA-compliant.
Responsiveness and Flexibility
ScriptSender created workflows to handle inbound and outbound ORM and ORU messages for NRAD. ScriptSender’s customization work includes the modification of accession numbers, removing base64 encoding to speed processing, handling addendums, converting data arrays, and other services. Key images—embedding images directly into a PDF report—are managed in a more streamlined way, with a robust logic system enabling proper attachment of the images quickly. A wide variety of naming conventions across NRAD’s broad customer base is now accommodated seamlessly.
A current project involves automating the sending of notifications for critical results, call-backs for breast radiology, and pulmonary embolism response. These notifications eliminate the need for manual intervention. Although still in the testing phase, this project demonstrates the commitment to ongoing enhancements for NRAD.
NRAD’s requirements are unique: this level of detailed customization is not scalable for every client. The challenge gave the ScriptSender team the opportunity to showcase its responsiveness and flexibility. Beyond the company’s standard inbound-outbound message handling and one-click integration, ScriptSender demonstrated its strength in value-added services.
The onboarding of customers has had the biggest impact for NRAD. “Integration with our customers is much faster with ScriptSender,” said Ambrose. “We have processes in place now that enable us to integrate a customer in about a day, and it does not require a lot of heavy lifting.”
“A government agency has very different needs than a hospital system or a federal prison,” said Ambrose. “We have such a broad range of customer types for our teleradiology expertise, and we have to be agile enough to respond to each. ScriptSender helps us do exactly that.”
A Real Partnership
The ScriptSender team forged a close partnership with Ambrose and the other NRAD professionals, a necessity for understanding the intricacies of their business, customer workflows, and goals. “Having good people you can trust and work with is always important,” said Ambrose. “The ScriptSender team is pro-active and responsive, and as a partner they’ve had good communication across the board.”
A key part of the relationship is ScriptSender’s pricing structure. “Competitors offer plans that essentially have a bucket of integrations, but that turns into a lot of up-selling, and ScriptSender has more integrity in their platform,” said Ambrose. “It was the price point and the ability to customize that was central to the success of this implementation. I can’t speak highly enough of the ScriptSender team.”
